AAP Legislators' Native Villages See Party Defeats, Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections

Yesterday, the results of Punjab’s Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections were announced. Following this, Gurpreet Sekhon, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), Charanjit Singh Channi, Rana Gurjit Singh, and reduced votes for the party in AAP legislators’ native villages have become topics of discussion.

SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj): December 18, 2025 – Across Punjab, the Zila Parishad and Block Samiti elections held on December 14, with results announced on December 17-18, have seen the ruling party (AAP) achieve a large-scale victory. However, more discussion is focused on issues like snatching of nomination papers during filing (December 3-5), high-handedness, Gurpreet Sekhon, Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), victories of candidates backed by Charanjit Singh Channi and Rana Gurjit Singh, and reduced votes for the party in AAP legislators’ native villages.

In these elections, there was intense competition among the ruling party, Congress, Akali Dal, BSP, BJP, and independent candidates for a total of 347 Zila Parishad zones and 2,838 Block Samiti zones. For Zila Parishad, a total of 1,265 candidates, and for Block Samiti, 8,314 candidates tried their luck.

From the filing of nomination papers to the announcement of results, these elections remained controversial. Whether it was allegations of the ruling party and police administration rejecting nominations and high-handedness, or harassing opposition candidates, these elections became a topic of discussion across Punjab. Political experts are calling these elections a semi-final for the 2027 Assembly elections and a “lifeline” for Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), which was reduced to just 3 MLAs in the 2022 elections.

Out of 347 Zila Parishad zones: Ruling party AAP won 218, Congress 62, Akali Dal 46, Independents 10, BJP 7, and BSP 3.

Similarly, out of 2,838 Block Samiti zones, according to figures so far: Ruling party AAP 1,531, Congress 612, Akali Dal (Badal) 445, Independents 144, BJP 73, and BSP 28. In these elections, 339 Block Samiti members were elected unopposed.

After the results, the most discussion is about defeats for the ruling party in AAP legislators’ native villages. AAP legislators and Assembly Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan (village Sandhwan), Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian (village Khuddian), MP Raj Kumar Chabbewal (village Manjhi), MP Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer (village Kurad), AAP chief spokesperson Kuldeep Dhaliwal (village Jagdev Kalan), MLA Sukhvir Singh Maiserkhana (village Maiserkhana), MLA Master Jagseer Singh (village Chak Fateh Singh Wala), MLA Kulwant Singh Pandori (village Pandori), AAP Chief Whip Baljinder Kaur (village Jagga Ram Tirth) – the ruling party faced humiliation in their native villages. However, AAP secured a win from Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s native village Satoj.

In these elections, from Firozpur, the faction of former gangster-turned-social worker leader Gurpreet Singh Sekhon registered a major victory. Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) was supporting the Sekhon faction. During the campaign, after a dispute with the local MLA, Sekhon’s arrest turned the tide against the ruling party, leading to massive public support for Sekhon. As a result, Sekhon’s wife Manjeet Kaur won the Bajidpur Zila Parishad zone, Kuljeet Kaur Sekhon won the Firozeshah Zila Parishad zone (by margins of 3,500-8,500 votes), and around 11 Block Samiti members out of 23 were victorious.

Former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi’s Assembly constituency Chamkaur Sahib saw a major victory for Congress. This falls in Rupnagar (Ropar) district. In Zila Parishad zones falling under Chamkaur Sahib constituency, Congress won all 3 zones, and out of a total 15 Block Samiti zones, Congress won or led in 13.

In the 2025 Punjab Zila Parishad and Panchayat Samiti elections, Rana Gurjit Singh (Congress MLA, Kapurthala) and his son Rana Inder Pratap Singh (Independent MLA, Sultanpur Lodhi) maintained strong dominance in their area. The father-son duo delivered a major victory for Congress in their region.

Despite AAP capturing around 60% of Zila Parishad and 55% of Panchayat Samiti zones, more discussion than the ruling party is about the political comeback of Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal), which finished third. Following this, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal appeared before the media to present the party’s side on the election results.

Both leaders said AAP won around 70% of the zones. In zones where AAP candidates faced defeat, it was by very narrow margins. They will analyze mistakes where losses occurred by small margins and connect with people.

Kejriwal said this victory is the people’s stamp on Bhagwant Mann government’s 4 years of work (education, health, jobs, roads, electricity, anti-drug campaign, etc.). Dismissing opposition allegations of high-handedness and rigging as baseless, Kejriwal said the elections were completely fair and peaceful, with videography done.
