The victim’s family (Uncle Jaswinder Singh and others) made serious allegations of involvement in the murder against AAP MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand and his associates. They accused the MLA of threatening and interfering. The family and villagers have staged a protest at the main square of Baghapurana and blocked the road. They say that they will not perform the cremation until action is taken against the MLA & accused on charges.
After this murder, a video of a woman, Rupinder Kaur, went viral on social media. She was married with Manpreet Singh bablu, who was related from a well settled farmer family of village Jaimal Wala Baghapurana about 3 years ago and was living in a live-in relationship with Happy Sarpanch for the past one year. She alleged that her husband and in-laws used to pressure her (Rupinder) to have an illicit relationship with her brother-in-law. Due to which they were having a dispute, and in the meantime, she came in contact with Happy Sarpanch, who was helping her to reach an agreement with her in-laws or to separate from the relationship.
Rupinder Kaur said that this matter (as a family dispute) had reached the police station several times. Due to this relationship, her husband Manpreet Singh had threatened to kill both of them (Rupinder and Happy) several times. They had also met AAP MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand to resolve the dispute. She made serious allegations against the AAP MLA and his associates in this matter, saying that they were involved in the conspiracy of murder. She believes that this old enmity (due to the affair) is the main reason for the murder, and the MLA interfered or cooperated in it.
MLA Amritpal Singh Sukhanand’s response: He rejected all the allegations and said that this murder is completely the result of family enmity. The MLA said that Rupinder Kaur herself has admitted that she was living with Happy, due to which (according to Rupinder), her husband threatened and finally killed her. The MLA said that after getting information about the case, as an MLA, he tried to explain both the parties (as mediation), but the matter was not resolved. He called the allegations politically motivated and also expressed his condolences to Happy’s family.
Politics has also intensified in this murder case after the alleged accusations against the ruling MLA (according to the deceased side) and opposition leaders (Bikram Majithia, Sukhpal Khaira etc.) questioned the pathetic law and order situation in Punjab and the performance of the AAP government and the police administration, they said that the third sarpanch was murdered in a few months. Opposition leaders demanded a CBI investigation, as the family is still adamant for justice and has not cremated the body.
