SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj): When farmers of Punjab try to focus on other crops instead of wheat and paddy due to increasing cost and other problems, then the problem of poor marketing and not getting a reasonable rate arises. After more than half of Punjab was hit by floods, the paddy yield of the remaining area has reduced by 20-25% in last Year, and Now the potato crop is also struggling to meet the expenses, which has become a cause of distress for the farmers. A young farmer from Bajidpur village in Ferozepur took a very scary step due to this problem.
On February 13, at around 3 pm, a 35-year-old young farmer Jagsir Singh (who cultivates potato crop in 15-20 quila) of village Bajidpur in Ferozepur shot Navneet Kaur (wife), Warisdeep (son) with his licensed revolver and then shot himself. According to people close to the young man, Jagsir Singh was a farmer and owner of 15-20 quila land and was also a kabaddi player. He was the sole support of his family, as his brother had died two years ago. The young man had cultivated potato crop in a large part of his land. He was going through a very worrying situation due to the extremely low market price of Rs 300-400 per quintal. At this price, the farmer was far from getting a chance to make a profit from per acre, and even the expenditure incurred by him per acre was not being met.
Ferozepur DSP (Rural) Karan Sharma has given a statement in this matter that we have sealed the room where the incident took place. The CCTV footage of the surroundings is being examined. The weapon (licensed pistol/revolver) has been seized. The police have also recorded statements of the villagers and neighbours, according to whom the family relations were generally good but there was tension due to the recent loss of the potato crop.
