US President Donald Trump has threatened to impose 100% tariffs on Canada. Trump posted on Truth Social that if Canada makes Trade deal with China, then 100% tariffs will be imposed on all goods coming from Canada to the US.
SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj): US President Donald Trump reacted to the potential China Canada makes trade Deal (agreement) by posting on Truth Social, threatening to impose 100% tariffs on all items exported from Canada’ to the US.
Canada’s Prime Minister Mark Carney, during his visit to China in January 2026, announced a new strategic partnership (trade deal) between Canada and China on January 16, following meetings with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang.
Under the preliminary agreement-in-principle on removing trade barriers and reducing tariffs, China will reduce its tariff on Canadian canola seed from approximately 85% to 15% by March 1, 2026 (this is a $4 billion market for Canada). In addition, China will not impose anti-dumping or discriminatory tariffs on Canadian canola meal, lobster, crab, and peas from March 1 until the end of the year.
Canada will reduce its 100% tariff on Chinese electric vehicles (EVs) to 6.1%, but only for the first 49,000 vehicles per year (this is a quota). These changes are expected to unlock nearly $3 billion in new orders for Canadian exporters.
Both countries agreed to increase investment and cooperation in clean energy and technology, agri-food, and wood products. A target has been set to increase Canadian exports to China by 50% by 2030.This deal is aimed at reducing Canada’s dependence on the US (where 70% of Canada’s exports go) and diversifying trade, especially due to Trump’s tariff threats. Carney described it as aligning with the “new world order” and called China a “predictable” partner.

Relations between the two neighboring countries have been deteriorating since President Trump’s return to power. Trump has openly stated several times that Canada should become America’s 51st state, which has not made relations pleasant between the two countries.
These relations worsened further when Canada’s Prime Minister Carney recently attacked the policies of the Trump administration. After this, Trump withdrew the invitation sent to the Canadian Prime Minister to join his ‘Board of Peace.’
Trump initially wrote, “If (Mark) Carney thinks he can turn Canada into a place for unloading Chinese goods so that China can send goods and products to the US, then he is making a very big mistake.”
Angered by the agreement with China, Trump addressed Carney as “Governor” instead of Prime Minister on Truth Social and wrote, “Governor Carney thinks he can turn Canada into a ‘Drop Off Port’ for China (a place to unload Chinese goods) so that China can send its goods and products to the US, then he is making a very big mistake.”
Trump further wrote, “China will eat Canada alive, swallow it whole—including the destruction of their businesses, the ruin of the social structure, and the destruction of the common way of life. If Canada makes any deal with China, then immediately 100% tariffs will be imposed on all Canadian goods and products in the US.
