Notably, the sanitation workers have said that they have found burnt pieces of currency notes near the official residence of Justice Yashwant Verma, a Delhi High Court judge who is facing investigation in the case of cash allegedly recovered from his residence. “We work in this mandal. We collect garbage from the streets.

We were cleaning and collecting garbage here 4-5 days ago when we found some small pieces of a burnt Rs 500 note. We found it on the same day. Now, we have found 1-2 pieces…we don’t know where the fire started,” Indrajit, a sanitation worker, told ANI.

Meanwhile, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna on Saturday (March 22, 2025) constituted a three-member committee comprising Punjab and Haryana High Court Chief Justice Sheel Nagu, Himachal Pradesh Chief Justice GS Sandhawalia and Karnataka High Court judge, Justice Anu Sivaraman to probe the allegations.

According to a press release issued by the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court has released the inquiry report filed by Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay in the controversy involving High Court judge Yashwant Verma. In his report, the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court said that prima facie he is of the opinion that the entire matter requires a thorough investigation.

The Supreme Court also released the response of Justice Yashwant Verma, who has denied the allegations and said that it clearly appears to be a conspiracy to implicate and defame him.

Justice Verma said that neither he nor any member of his family had ever kept any cash in that storeroom, and added that he strongly condemns the insinuation that the alleged cash belongs to him. He said that the room where the fire broke out and where the cash was allegedly found was an outhouse and not the main building where the judges and families reside.

Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay directed Justice Yashwant Verma to preserve all communications on his phone; this includes conversations, messages and data, acting on the direction of the Chief Justice of India (CJI), as the controversy around him continues to unfold. Justice Verma, in a statement given to Delhi High Court Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyay, denied the allegations implicating him in the cash recovery incident.

According to media reports, the cash was inadvertently found by fire tenders after a fire broke out at the judge’s house on March 14. The judge was not present at his house.

In another development, Mr Meghwal recently attended a programme of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) in Imphal, Manipur, where five Supreme Court judges were also present. During the programme, Mr Meghwal discussed the government’s plans to expedite peace restoration in Manipur, an issue that has also been a topic of discussion in Parliament.

According to Mr Meghwal, the Home Minister has assured that the proposal for the future of Manipur after the President’s rule will be discussed in detail in Parliament. “Five Supreme Court judges attended the NALSA event in Manipur.

I was also there. We talked in the event about how we will expedite peace restoration (in Manipur). We also discussed Manipur in Parliament… The Home Minister said that the proposal for Manipur after President’s rule will be discussed in detail in Parliament…” he said.
