Gill Laid A Strong Foundation For India By Scoring 114 Not Out

On the first day of the second Test match between England and India, played on July 2, 2025, at Edgbaston, India scored 310/5.

Captain Shubman Gill played a magnificent unbeaten 114 runs (216 balls, 12 fours), marking his seventh Test century and his second consecutive century in Tests.

Yashasvi Jaiswal also played a brisk 87 runs (107 balls), falling just short of a century when he was caught by wicketkeeper Jamie Smith off Ben Stokes’ bowling.

Ravindra Jadeja was unbeaten on 41 runs (67 balls) at the close of play, forming a crucial 99* run partnership for the sixth wicket with Gill.

India started the day cautiously after KL Rahul’s early dismissal, but Jaiswal and Gill’s innings propelled the team to a strong position.

England’s bowlers, particularly Chris Woakes (2 wickets) and Stokes (1 wicket), found some success, but the lack of assistance from the pitch prevented them from fully containing the Indian batters.

The score of 310/5 provides India with a solid foundation heading into the second day, with the potential to reach close to or beyond 400, especially if Gill and Jadeja can extend their partnership through the first session
