High Court forms SIT in case of death of 22-year-old girl and missing kidney

In the year 2021, a girl was admitted to Hiranandani Medical Centre (HMC) Hospital, Ludhiana. Where she died and the postmortem report confirmed that the left kidney was missing. The High Court, while hearing the case, formed an SIT and ordered an investigation.

Mangat Ram Sharma had filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court against a renowned hospital in Ludhiana. According to the complainant, on June 1, 2021, his 22-year-old daughter Tania Sharma was admitted to HMC Hospital Ludhiana for treatment. According to the complaint, on June 2, Dr. Vyom Bhargava (spine surgeon) and a team of other doctors performed the surgery. A second surgery was also performed on June 7, but the girl’s condition continued to deteriorate and she died on June 16, 2021.

After the complainant (father) gave a report to the police, the police conducted a postmortem. In which the shocking fact came to light that the left kidney of the deceased was missing. Based on the postmortem report, the petitioner father suspected medical negligence and filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

During the court hearing, the court observed that the medical board has given the probable causes of death. But no clear conclusion has been given about the possible negligence done by the doctors. The postmortem report clearly states that the left kidney was not found. No expert report or investigation has been done on this serious issue in the medical records.

The Hon’ble Court The Punjab and Haryana High Court has issued orders to constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the case of the death of a 22-year-old girl at HMC Hospital in Ludhiana and the disappearance of her kidney.  Justice Kuldeep Tiwari has directed the Ludhiana Police Commissioner to conduct an immediate and thorough investigation into the matter, as the post-mortem report revealed that the deceased’s left kidney was missing, which further strengthened the suspicion of medical negligence and criminal action against the doctors and the hospital. The next hearing of the case will be on September 30, 2025, in which the Police Commissioner will have to submit the investigation report.
