India defeated England women’s cricket team in the first T20 match

India Vs England Women's T20 Series

In the first T20I match between India Women and England Women at Trent Bridge, Nottingham on June 28, 2025, Smriti Mandhana produced a historic performance, scoring her maiden T20I century.

Leading India in the absence of Harmanpreet Kaur, who was ruled out due to a head injury, Mandhana scored 112 runs in 62 balls at a strike rate of 180.65, which included 15 fours and three sixes.

Her century, completed in just 51 balls, made her the first Indian woman to score a century in all three international formats – Tests, ODIs and T20Is – and surpassed Harmanpreet Kaur’s 103, which is the highest individual score by an Indian in women’s T20Is. Mandhana’s innings took India to a formidable 210/5, India’s second-highest T20 total and the highest against England.

She shared key partnerships, including an opening stand of 77 with Shafali Verma (20 off 22 balls) and a 94-run stand for the second wicket with Harleen Deol (43 off 23 balls). Her attacking innings featured excellent drives, sweeps and pull shots.

She brought up her half-century in 27 balls and completed her century by hitting Lauren Bell for consecutive boundaries.

India’s bowlers, led by debutant left-arm spinner Shree Charni (4/12), put up a fine display after Mandhana’s century. India bowled out England for 113 in 14.5 overs, giving India a 97-run victory.

This was England’s biggest T20 defeat. Nat Siver-Burnt’s runs were the only significant resistance for England. Other wickets from the Indian bowlers were taken by Deepti Sharma (2/32), Radha Yadav (2/15), Amanjot Kaur (1/22), and Arundhati Reddy (1/18).Mandhana was adjudged Player of the Match.

The victory gave India a 1–0 lead in the five-match T20 series. Mandhana later commented during a press conference that after being dismissed frequently in the 70s and 80s, it “took a long time” for a century.

She praised Harleen Deol’s contribution and the bowling performance. The second T20 of the series scheduled to be played in Bristol on 1 July 2025.
