The incident is linked to an ongoing dispute between two groups within the transgender community. According to the police, the dispute had escalated and a rape case related to it had made the matter more serious.
On June 2025, two persons Akshay and Pankaj (who called themselves journalists) tortured and threatened a transgender woman in Nandalalpura Dera. They cited old cases against her dera gurus to blackmail the victim and tried to have forcible intercourse with her. This scared her and she kept quiet to protect the community.
The police registered an FIR in this case on October 16 and have started a search operation to arrest both the accused under Section 18 of the Transgender Protection Act, 2019. Apart from this, the accused are accused of looting Rs 1.5 lakh from the victim.
Police Administration said that the suicide attempt was also due to the ongoing dispute within the community. One group accused the other of colluding with the police, which increased the tension. Meanwhile, the rape case has angered the protesters. Community leader Kunwar said, “Transgenders are also human beings, but we do not get protection. If the accused are not caught, we will end our lives.”
The police held talks with the community to control the situation and community leader Sapna has been arrested for questioning. The DCP said that the rape and the dispute are separate cases, but the police are investigating every aspect.
