Jalandhar Police arrests man who hit and fled after hitting 114-Year-old Fauja Singh with Fortuner car.

Singh died in a road accident in his native village Beas village near Jalandhar. He was crossing the road on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway at around 3:30 pm when a vehicle hit him.

114-year-old runner Sardar Fauja Singh, who is a British citizen, had been living in his native village Beas for the past few years. He was crossing the road on the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway when a vehicle hit him. Due to which he suffered serious injuries and died in a private hospital. The vehicle driver fled the spot after the incident.

Fauja Singh started running marathons at the age of 89 and became the first 100-year-old to complete the entire marathon at the age of 100.  He ran nine full marathons from 2000 to 2013, with his best time being 5 hours 40 minutes at the 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon.

He was also a torchbearer for the 2012 London Olympics and received a personal letter from Queen Elizabeth II on his 100th birthday.  At the age of 114, he joined the ‘Nasha Mukt-Rangla Punjab’ march and his presence gave unbeatable energy to the youth.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, besides many personalities from the country and abroad, expressed grief over Singh’s death and remembered Singh, describing his fitness and spirit at the age of 114 as an inspiration for everyone.

The police have arrested Amrikpal Singh Dhillon, a 26-year-old NRI, in connection with the death of Fauja Singh in a road accident. He was driving the vehicle involved in the accident, a Toyota Fortuner, which has been seized by the police. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
