Kanchanpreet’s Release: A Major Embarrassment for the Punjab Government

Kanchanpreet Kaur Randhawa (daughter of Akali leader and former MLA Bibi Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa) was arrested on 28 November 2025 in connection with cases related to the Tarn Taran by-election. Following court orders, she was released early this morning (29-30 November 2025).

SNPNEWS.IN Report (Gurmail Kamboj): Akali leader and daughter of former MLA Bibi Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa, Kanchanpreet Kaur Randhawa, was called by police to Majitha police station, Amritsar on 28 November 2025 (Thursday) for questioning in cases of violation of the election code of conduct and other charges during the Tarn Taran by-election. After six hours of interrogation, she was arrested and taken to Tarn Taran the same night.

Four FIRs had been registered against Kanchanpreet during the election period, including violation of the model code of conduct and three other cases. Akali leaders and workers viewed this action as political vendetta.

Senior Akali leader Virsa Singh Valtoha accused the government of targeting Kanchanpreet for political revenge. He said that by targeting the daughter of Akali candidate Sukhwinder Kaur Randhawa in the Tarn Taran by-election, the government has broken Punjab’s long-standing tradition of respecting the daughters and sisters of opposition leaders. The Akali Dal called it political propaganda.

Valtoha also alleged that an “honest” SSP was suspended for failing to arrest Kanchanpreet, which is injustice to young officers. This incident raises serious questions about the police administration, which the Aam Aadmi Party government is allegedly using as a weapon to suppress opposition leaders.

After the arrest, Advocate Arshdeep Singh Kler, Head of Shiromani Akali Dal’s Legal Cell and party spokesperson, filed a habeas corpus petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court on 29 November 2025 (Saturday). The petition challenged the arrest as illegal and politically motivated.

Akali lawyers argued that Kanchanpreet had already obtained anticipatory bail in all four cases related to distribution of money and threatening voters during the elections. The arrest without notice was declared illegal.

Justice Rajesh Bhardwaj’s bench, after hearing the matter, ordered:

● Police should not be given custody of Randhawa; she must be produced directly before the judge.

● No remand should be granted until her lawyers arrive, and the defence arguments must be heard.

● The court termed the police action illegal and directed the Tarn Taran court to conduct an immediate hearing.

Following the High Court’s order, the Tarn Taran court began hearing arguments at 8 PM. After an 8-hour-long hearing, the court ordered her immediate release in the early hours of the morning. The court declared the police arrest as “against transparency” and completely unlawful.

After her release, Kanchanpreet Kaur reached Sri Darbar Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar and offered thanks to Waheguru. This created an atmosphere of celebration among Akali Dal workers.

This has caused a major political embarrassment for the Punjab government.
