Navneet Chaturvedi's Nomination Cancelled, Punjab and Chandigarh Police Face Off Over Arrest Attempt

Navneet Chaturvedi, a resident of Jaipur, Rajasthan, claims to be the National President of the Janata Party. On October 6, 2025, he filed his nomination as an Independent candidate for the Rajya Sabha by-election from Punjab, claiming the support of 10-11 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs. Following this, AAP filed an FIR against him, alleging fraud.

SNPNEWS.IN News Update (Gurmail Kamboj): Navneet Chaturvedi, identifying himself as the National President of the Janata Party, filed his nomination for the Punjab Rajya Sabha by-election on October 6, 2025, as an Independent candidate, claiming the support of 10-11 AAP MLAs. He stated that there is internal discontent within AAP, with around 68 MLAs reportedly unhappy with the government.

AAP termed this a serious case of fraud, asserting that the names and signatures of their MLAs were misused. The party labeled it as “vote theft” and linked it to deceitful practices.

On October 13, 2025, Punjab Police, based on a complaint by AAP MLA Dinesh Chadha, registered an FIR in Ropar, alleging that his name was fraudulently used and circulated on digital platforms. Chaturvedi’s nomination papers were scrutinized at the Chandigarh Vidhan Sabha, and the Returning Officer rejected them after 8 AAP MLAs confirmed that their names and signatures were forged.

Chaturvedi called the FIR “political blackmail” and claimed that the matter falls under the Election Commission’s jurisdiction, not the Punjab Police. He reiterated that 68 MLAs are against the AAP government and alleged that his nomination documents were leaked from the Returning Officer’s office. He demanded action against the officials involved.

On October 14, 2025, Punjab Police arrived at Chaturvedi’s residence in Sector 3, Chandigarh, to arrest him. However, Chandigarh Police intervened and protected him, leading to a confrontation between the two police forces. A Chandigarh Police Inspector was surrounded by Ropar Police (in civilian clothes), prompting him to draw his pistol and call for PCR assistance.

The Chandigarh Police SSP personally arrived at the scene, took Chaturvedi in his vehicle, and brought him to the SSP office. Four Ropar Police vehicles reached the SSP office, causing a commotion. Eventually, the Ropar team retreated a short distance and waited. Chaturvedi remains safe at the Chandigarh Police Headquarters.
