At least 26 people, two foreign tourists among them, were killed by a group of terrorists who emerged from the dense forests around the trekking paradise of the Baisaran meadows in the upper reaches of Pahalgam on Tuesday afternoon.

A number of others were wounded, including with critical injuries, and the death toll is likely to rise, official sources told The SNPNEWS.IN, though there is no official casualty data from the government as yet. PM Modi, who had taken stock of the situation earlier in the day, will be cutting short his ongoing visit to Saudi Arabia to return to India soon.

The death toll has not been officially announced, which the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had said is still being ascertained. “This attack is much larger than anything we’ve seen directed at civilians in recent years,” he said on X. He met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Srinagar for a review meeting.

Condemning the terror attack on tourists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that those behind the heinous act will be brought to justice.

Mr. Modi held a telephonic conversation with Union Home Minister Amit Shah following the terrorist attack, and directed him to take all necessary measures in response to the incident.

They came in army uniforms and started asking for identity cards from the tourists. After this, the terrorists started shooting at the tourists who were Hindus. It took 30 minutes for the security forces to get the information about the attack and reach the spot. During this time, the terrorists fled towards the hills. There is no information yet about them being killed or caught.

Death of a Navy officer

A Navy officer has also died in the Pahalgam attack. This was confirmed by an officer. He said that Lieutenant Vinay Narwal (26 years old) posted in Kochi has died in this attack. He got married on 16 April and was on leave.

U.S. President Trump calls PM Modi, says both countries stand together in the fight against terrorism

President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Modi and conveyed his deepest condolences at the loss of innocent lives in the terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. President Trump strongly condemned the terror attack and expressed full support to India to bring to justice the perpetrators of this heinous attack.
