Suicide rates in India are increasing at an alarming rate, especially in states like Punjab.
According to a World Health Organization report, one person commits suicide every 40 seconds in the world, and it is the second leading cause of death among people aged 15-30. The number of people with mental health problems increased by 18.4% between 2005 and 2015, with India and China accounting for 50%.
Causes:
● Mental health problems: Increasing prevalence of anxiety, stress, and depression, especially among young people. In 2015, 38 million people in India were suffering from anxiety.
● Social and economic pressures: Unemployment, family responsibilities, failure in studies or careers, and poverty.
● Changing lifestyles: Lack of tolerance, inability to fulfill dreams, and social isolation.
● In the context of Punjab: Debt, drug problem, and agrarian crisis have increased the incidence of suicides among farmers and youth.
● Recent case: The suicide of property dealer Sandeep Singh Rajpal on June 22, 2025 in Mohali is a sad example of this trend, in which he first killed his wife and son and then committed suicide.
● Preventive measures: Mental health services: Increase the availability of counseling and support centers. Awareness: Education about mental health in schools, colleges, and communities.
● Government policies: Schemes to reduce unemployment and poverty, especially to address the agrarian crisis in Punjab.
● Social support: Promote dialogue and tolerance in the family and community.
To prevent the incidence of suicides, concrete steps need to be taken at the government, society, and individual levels, so that this sad trend can be overcome.
