Protests in Morocco over Healthcare, Education, and Employment Issues

There is significant anger among Moroccan youth due to the government’s expenditure of billions of dollars on the 2030 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations. As a result, large-scale protests have been observed across the country.

SNPNEWS.IN Morocco, Sep 25: Recently, protests initiated by Generation Z (Gen Z) have shaken the entire nation. These protests, primarily organized by the youth, express frustration over issues related to healthcare, the education system, and employment. The demonstrations began on September 27 and 28, 2025, and have now spread to several cities.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Morocco has only 8 doctors per 10,000 people, far below the WHO-recommended number of 25. The shortage of essential equipment in hospitals and the deaths of pregnant women have further fueled public anger.

Protesters allege that the government is spending billions of dollars on the 2030 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations, including building new stadiums and renovating old ones. They argue that the government has funds for extravagant expenditures while completely neglecting basic services. The youth are speaking out against unemployment, social inequality, and corruption.

These protests are distinct from those organized by unions or political parties, as they are primarily coordinated through social media platforms like TikTok and Discord.

Protesters have demonstrated in Rabat, Casablanca, Marrakesh, Agadir, Tangier, and 11 other cities.

The police have used baton charges and arrests to disperse the protests. On September 28 and 29, over 200 people were arrested, including children and families.

Groups like “Morocco Youth Voice” and “Gen Z 212” announced peaceful protests, but the police thwarted these efforts. Following police actions, public outrage has intensified on social media, with people highlighting their constitutional rights.

These protests reflect the frustration of Moroccan youth, and there is hope that they will lead to changes in government policies.
