According to Patiala Police, a 75-year-old man from Sangrur, Punjab, and his wife were arrested and produced in court, where Court gave to police remand of Karamjit for one day.

A 75-year-old man, Karamjit Singh, died in custody at the Sanaur police station in Punjab. The incident took place on June 28, 2025, after Karamjit was arrested along with his wife on June 26 in a forgery case.
Police claimed that Karamjit and his wife Balwinder Kaur have been arrested under sections 318(4), 338, 336(3), 340(2), and 61(2) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
According to the police, Karamjit’s health suddenly deteriorated on Saturday morning and he was taken to the Government Rajindra Hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Police say the exact cause of the death of the elderly man will be known from the post-mortem report, which has been conducted under the supervision of a magistrate.
On the other hand, the family of the deceased accused the police of torture and stated that the cause of death was police brutality, due to which they refused to take the body and demanded action against the responsible police officers.
The son of the deceased Karamjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, gave a statement that his father died due to police brutality. He said, “Yesterday my father underwent a medical examination for the court hearing, in which he was completely healthy.
Then how could his health suddenly deteriorate in a few hours and he could die?
“We demand a fair investigation and strict action against the responsible police officers.” In this statement, Gurpreet questioned the actions of the police and demanded a full investigation into the matter.
Another relative of the deceased alleged that the police had acted under political pressure. The matter was related to a land dispute. Due to which the deceased and his wife were taken into custody by the police. Where the deceased died, he further said that a magisterial level inquiry should be conducted in this matter and the department should take action against the personnel responsible for the death in police custody.
