Punjab Hit By Floods, Politicians Have Not Found Any Solution To The Floods In 78 Years?

A high alert has been issued due to flooding in several villages in seven districts of Punjab – Ferozepur, Fazilka, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur and Pathankot.

SNPNEWS.IN Update, August 26: Continuous rainfall for over 36 hours in parts of Punjab, coupled with runoff water from Himachal Pradesh, has caused water levels in the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers to rise, severely disrupting normal life.

Even 78 years after independence, the people of Punjab find no relief from the havoc caused by rivers during the rainy season. Every year, the administration and government make grand claims before the monsoon about repairing and maintaining the dilapidated embankments of the Sutlej, Beas, Ravi, and their tributaries. However, crores of rupees are spent only on paper in the name of repairs and cleaning.

On July 14, 2025, in the Punjab Legislative Assembly, Water Resources Minister Barinder Kumar Goel, responding to a Call Attention Notice raised by Rana Inder Pratap Singh (Sultanpur Lodhi MLA), son of Rana Gurjit Singh, made tall claims about flood preparedness and management, which have proven hollow.

How long will the rural and urban residents of Punjab continue to watch the devastation caused by floods due the hollow government claims? Politicians visit flood-affected areas for their political gain to get a few photos taken, and leave the people to their fate. Why have the so-called pro-Punjab politicians of Punjab, who have burdened Punjab with a debt of Rs 4 lakh crore, not been able to find a permanent solution to the state’s rivers?

Who is responsible for the loss of billions of rupees worth of Punjab’s resources to floods. the bureaucracy or the so called Punjab-loving political vultures?

According to All India Radio, a high alert has been issued in Firozpur, Fazilka, Tarn Taran, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Gurdaspur, and Pathankot due to the current situation. Schools and colleges across Punjab have been closed until August 30.
