Punjab Under Flood Fury: Madhopur Headworks Damaged, 1 missing

SNPNEWS.IN, August 27, 2025: Continuous rainfall for nearly a week and cloudburst incidents in the hilly and plain areas of Punjab and its neighboring states have led to the release of water from Ranjit Sagar Dam, Bhakra, and Pong Dams, causing the Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej rivers to reach dangerous levels. This has resulted in a flood-like situation.

Millions of people living along the banks of the Sutlej, Ravi, and Beas rivers in Punjab are currently affected by the floods. Thousands of acres of crops, livestock, and property worth crores have been destroyed in seven districts of Punjab.

Affected Districts in Punjab: Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur, Tarn Taran, Amritsar, Firozpur, Fazilka.-

Most Affected Areas: Madhopur Headworks and regions near the Satluj Ravi & Beas River.

Chakki River: The old road bridge has collapsed, and the Nahini Bridge is in danger.-

Lakhanpur-Madhopur Bridge: Traffic halted, and railway services suspended.

Ghanie Ke Village: The Dhussi Bandh breached, submerging thousands of acres of farmland.

Impact in Pakistan: Flooding in Ravi, Chenab, and Sutlej rivers has affected areas like Narowal, Sialkot, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Kasur due to water releases from Indian dams.

The Madhopur Headworks, constructed during British rule, serves the Upper Bari Doab Canal (UBDC), which irrigates Gurdaspur, Amritsar, and Pathankot. Located in Punjab’s Pathankot district, this headworks is a crucial barrage on the RaviBay River, regulating water from the Ranjit Sagar Dam for irrigation.
