The oil refining company RIL has clearly acknowledged in its official statement that it has completely stopped importing Russian oil.
SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj): After the threats and sanctions from US President Donald Trump, India has unofficially completely stopped purchasing crude oil from Russia in the last 2-3 months. This has become almost clear after the official statement issued by Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) on January 6, 2026.
Reliance Industries issued a statement saying that it has not purchased any Russian crude oil in the last approximately three weeks and there is no expectation of any Russian oil delivery in January 2026. In this statement, they called a Bloomberg report “completely wrong” which claimed that three tankers loaded with Russian oil are heading towards the Jamnagar refinery. Reliance said that the Sikka port is also used by other companies, so that oil could be for them.

Statement by Reliance Industries Limited:
A news report in Bloomberg claiming “three vessels laden with Russian Oil are heading for Reliance Industries Limited’s Jamnagar refinery” is blatantly untrue.
Reliance Industries’s Jamnagar refinery has not received any cargo of Russian oil at its refinery in the past three weeks approx. and is not expecting any Russian crude oil deliveries in January.
We are deeply pained that those claiming to be at the forefront of fair journalism chose to ignore the denial by RIL of buying any Russian oil to be delivered in January and published a wrong report tarnishing our image.
Earlier, on October 24, 2025, Reliance had stopped using Russian oil for its export-oriented (SEZ) refinery to comply with European Union sanctions (which will come into effect from January 21, 2026).
“We have noted the recent restrictions announced by the European Union, United Kingdom and the United States on crude oil imports from Russia and export of refined products to Europe. Reliance is currently assessing the implications, including the new compliance requirements. We will comply with the EU’s guidelines on the import of refined products into Europe. Whenever there is any guidance from the Indian Government in this respect, as always, we will be complying fully. Reliance has consistently aligned itself with the objectives of ensuring India’s energy security.
The Company remains fully committed to maintaining its longstanding and impeccable record of adherence to applicable sanctions and regulatory frameworks and will be adapting the refinery operations to meet the compliance requirements.
As is customary in the industry, supply contracts evolve to reflect changing market and regulatory conditions. Reliance will address these conditions while maintaining the relationships with its suppliers. Reliance is confident that its time-tested, diversified crude sourcing strategy will continue to ensure stability and reliability in its refinery operations for meeting the domestic and export requirements, including to Europe.”

After the recent statements issued by the country’s largest private sector oil refining company RIL, it has become clear that the claims by the Indian government and the ruling party (BJP) of not bowing down before America’s threats have been exposed as false. After RIL’s claims, the ruling party appears to be kneeling before the incumbent US President Donald Trump.
