Stampede at Andhra Pradesh Temple During Religious Event: 9 Dead

In Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh, news reports indicate that 7 people died in a stampede at a temple. It is being said that today on Ekadashi, a large crowd of devotees had gathered at the Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kashibugga, which led to the stampede.

On the sacred occasion of Kartik Ekadashi, thousands of devotees had gathered at Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh. They were standing in queue for darshan at the newly built temple. Due to the crowd going out of control, the railing in the queue broke. As a result, devotees started falling on each other, creating an atmosphere of panic and stampede.

In the incident that occurred around 11:30 AM, 9 people died (including 7 women, 1 child, and 1 man). According to the administration, 7 deaths occurred on the spot, and 2 succumbed in the hospital. Around 20-25 people are injured in the stampede and have been admitted to nearby hospitals. Some reports mention the death toll reaching up to 10, but officially, it is confirmed as 9.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu:
He described the incident as “heart-wrenching” and expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families. He ordered immediate treatment for the injured and directed that a case of ‘Commission of Homicide’ (culpable homicide) be registered against the temple owner. He stated that if the organizers had informed in advance, police security could have been provided.

Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan:
He reached the spot to oversee relief operations and ordered an investigation.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah:
He expressed grief and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.

Rahul Gandhi, Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan, and Governor S. Abdul Nazeer also issued messages of sympathy.Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced ₹2 lakh ex-gratia for the victims.
