Trump Imposes Additional 25% Tariff On India, Total Tariff Reaches 50%

Is the U.S. imposing tariffs on Indian exports an attempt to pressure India into facilitating American companies in the agricultural sector and eliminating subsidies?.

SNPNEWS.IN Update, August 6, 2025: U.S. President Donald Trump has turned his threat into reality by imposing an additional 25% tariff on India. The new tariff, combined with the previously set 25% tariff, will result in a total of 50% (25% + 25%). According to an executive order signed by Trump, the additional tariff will take effect after 21 days.

The White House’s executive order stated that “the Indian government is currently importing Russian oil, directly or indirectly.” Based on this, the U.S. has decided to impose an additional 25% tariff on all products imported from India.Just two days ago, India had clearly told the U.S. and the European Union in Washington regarding the issue of purchasing oil from Russia: “When you haven’t stopped importing oil and gas from Russia yourselves, why should we?”

The U.S. policy of imposing tariffs, beyond the issue of India purchasing Russian oil, has sparked discussions about efforts to establish American companies in India’s agricultural sector. It is being said that the U.S. is indirectly pressuring India to create a favorable environment for American companies to compete in the market, meaning that the Indian government should eliminate subsidies provided to the agricultural sector.

This would make it easier for American businesses to compete in India’s agricultural market. However, the Indian government has already rejected this demand.
