216 prisoners escape from Pakistan jail, 80 re-arrested, search for 135 continues

SNPNEWS.IN Update: June 2, 2025, 216 prisoners escaped from Malir District Jail, also known as “Bacha Jail,” in Karachi, Pakistan, amid chaos triggered by three low-intensity earthquakes (3.2 to 3.6 magnitude) in the Landhi Fault area. The tremors caused cracks in the prison walls and a partial collapse, allowing inmates to exploit a breach and overpower guards. Many prisoners were already outside their barracks for safety reasons, which facilitated the breakout. Heavy gunfire was reported during the incident.
Within hours, authorities recaptured 80 of the escapees, with 135 still at large. The escapees primarily include drug offenders and psychologically vulnerable individuals, alongside some violent criminals. A manhunt is ongoing, complicated by Karachi’s dense urban environment. Announcements from local mosques urged residents to assist in locating the fugitives. DIG Jail Hassan Sahetu and Director General Rangers Sindh, Major General Muhammad Shamrez, visited the facility to strengthen security measures.
The incident highlights ongoing issues with Pakistan’s prison security and disaster preparedness, with investigations underway to address potential administrative negligence.
