Former DGP Siddharth Chattopadhyay claimed in a statement filed with Vigilance that Bikram Singh Majithia has 100% links with drug smugglers and evidence was found in 2012-13 as well, but the Akali-BJP government did not take action at that time.
Senior leader of Shiromani Akali Dal Bikram Singh Majithia was arrested by Vigilance on June 25, 2025 from Amritsar after a struggle and controversy. After which he was produced in Mohali court from where the court sent Majithia on 7-day remand.
Majithia was arrested by the Vigilance Department on charges of possessing illegal assets worth Rs 540 crore and was taken to several locations in Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Himachal Pradesh for questioning.
Majithia has moved the Punjab and Haryana High Court against the action taken by the Punjab Vigilance in the case related to disproportionate assets and drugs. Majithia has claimed that the FIR registered against him is motivated by political vendetta and intention to defame him. He has termed his arrest as illegal and has accused the government of political misconduct.
Majithia’s next appearance after 7 days of remand is likely to be in Mohali court on July 2, apart from this, the eyes of the entire Punjab are also fixed on the hearing of his petition in the High Court.
Today, news came out that in this case, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has demanded documents related to the Majithia case from the Punjab government and has said that the central agency NCB will start an investigation in the drug case.
After the NCB intervened in the case and asked for documents, Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab President and Cabinet Minister Aman Arora, while holding a press conference, termed the intervention of the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in the Bikram Singh Majithia case as a “stunt to save Majithia”. Addressing the press, Arora said that the NCB’s request for records of Majithia’s Rs 540 crore drug money laundering case from the Punjab Police is part of political pressure.
He alleged that this action is an attempt to save Majithia from legal punishment and a conspiracy to weaken the government’s campaign against drugs.
Arora asserted that the AAP government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is working on a “zero tolerance” policy against drug trafficking. He said that Vigilance has strong evidence against Majithia, and the NCB’s intervention is part of political pressure, which the government will not tolerate.
He questioned the NCB and said that if the central government is serious about drugs, then the Punjab Police investigation should be supported, not obstructed. He termed the NCB’s action as “a ploy” and said that the Punjab Police and Vigilance have strong evidence, and the investigation will be carried out to completion.
Responding to Aman Arora’s press conference, the Shiromani Akali Dal termed Arora’s statement as baseless and political and condemned the government’s performance, while Majithia’s family members claimed that the AAP government is targeting Majithia politically.
The case has been a hotbed of controversy in Punjab politics. The Akali Dal and the BJP call it political vendetta, while the AAP government is calling it part of its war on drugs.
The Congress appears divided, with some Congress leaders supporting the government and others opposing it.
