Former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sentenced to Death

In the case related to the deaths of around 1,400 people during the 2024 student protests, Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal have been sentenced to death.

SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj): On 17 November, a three-judge bench of the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT), headed by Justice Mohammad Golam Mortuza Mazumdar, sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal to death. They were found guilty on charges of inciting attacks on student protesters in 2024 using drones, helicopters, and lethal weapons, including incitement to murder, issuing orders for killings, and failing to prevent atrocities. According to the United Nations, approximately 1,400 people were killed in these actions.

Former Police Chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun was sentenced to 5 years in prison by the International Crimes Tribunal for turning state witness.

The verdict, delivered in absentia, is a major blow to Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal (both currently living in exile in India) ahead of the elections scheduled for February 2026, and it could spell serious trouble for the Awami League party.

The interim government of Bangladesh, led by Nubel virami Muhammad Yunus, has formally requested India to extradite Sheikh Hasina and the former Home Minister. India has taken note of the request and spoken of constructive cooperation with the people of Bangladesh.

The United Nations has described the verdict as significant for the victims but condemned the imposition of the death penalty.

Sheikh Hasina has called the verdict “biased and politically motivated” and labelled the interim government as “violent and having murderous intentions.”
