Punjab: Congress Party's Factionalism – Everyone Wants the CM’s Chair.

The country’s oldest party, Congress, is once again being torn apart by internal factionalism in Punjab. The dream of returning to power in 2027 looks increasingly difficult.

SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj) – 9 December 2025 Punjab Congress President Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has expelled Bibi Navjot Kaur Sidhu, wife of senior leader and former cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, from the primary membership of the party.

The action came after Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s explosive statement on 7 December 2025 in Chandigarh, shortly after meeting the Governor.

Speaking to reporters, she said: “We always talk about Punjab and Punjabiyat… but we don’t have ₹500 crore to give in order to sit on the Chief Minister’s chair.”

When media asked if anyone had directly demanded money from her, she replied:“No, but whoever brings a suitcase of ₹500 crore becomes the Chief Minister.”

She added that Navjot Singh Sidhu will return to active politics only if he is declared the CM face, because “we want to transform Punjab, not buy it with money.” She also took a direct dig at other aspirants (Partap Singh Bajwa, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Charanjit Singh Channi, and Amarinder Singh Raja Warring) thmself, saying the party is full of CM contenders busy pulling each other down, a mistake Congress already paid for in the 2022 elections. The remark triggered a massive storm. On 8 December, Navjot Kaur Sidhu claimed her words were deliberately distorted.

Senior leaders immediately hit back, asking: “When Navjot Singh Sidhu was made PPCC president, to whom and how much money was paid? How much was paid to make him MP and minister?”

Hours later, Raja Warring expelled her from the party on charges of “anti-party activities”.

In response, Navjot Kaur Sidhu posted on X: “I refuse to stand with an insensitive, irresponsible, morally dishonest and corrupt President. I stand with all my brothers and sisters who are hurt by his incompetence and irresponsible behaviour. I refuse to accept him as President. I am surprised why the Chief Minister is still protecting him.”

With the Congress high command already haunted by the memory of the 2022 defeat caused by infighting and the sudden rise of AAP, this fresh rebellion by the Sidhu camp, just two years before the 2027 elections, has sounded alarm bells.

While the party was hoping to capitalise on strong anti-incumbency against the ruling AAP, the open war for the CM’s chair now threatens to destroy Congress’s chances once again. In Punjab Congress, it seems everyone wants the top job, but no one wants unity.
