Captain Amarinder Singh Eager to Say Goodbye to BJP

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who joined the BJP after the 2022 Assembly elections, has been in the news in recent days due to his statements.

SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj): December 13, 2025, The Maharaja of the Patiala royal family and former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who resigned as Punjab Chief Minister on September 18, 2021, then said goodbye to Congress on November 2, 2021, formed the (Punjab Lok Congress), allied with the BJP, and contested the 2022 Assembly elections.

After Captain himself (from Patiala) and other candidates lost in the 2022 Assembly elections, and AAP came to power in Punjab, on September 19, 2022, the (PLC) was merged into the BJP, and he joined the BJP at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, where he was welcomed by Union Ministers Narendra Singh Tomar and Kiren Rijiju. On the same day, he also met BJP President J.P. Nadda and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Former Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh, who is now associated with the BJP, has given several interviews recently in which, even after joining the BJP, he has remembered Congress and viewed it like a “family.” He said that things in the BJP remain very “secret,” whereas in Congress, whenever he called the central leaders, he could immediately talk to the leadership.

He clearly said, “I still miss Congress today.” This statement came in a recent interview given by Captain, where he also commented on Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s statements. He has also said that due to a lack of cadre for the BJP in Punjab, forming a government in 2027 without an alliance with the Akali Dal is impossible; according to him, the BJP is incapable of winning elections alone in Punjab. According to this statement, he is feeling uncomfortable even in the BJP.

The statement by former Punjab Chief Minister and BJP leader came in response to Navjot Kaur Sidhu’s claim of “Chief Minister for 500 crore,” which Captain called a “total lie” and labeled the Sidhu couple as “unstable.” He said he has observed the Sidhu husband-wife for a long time and they are talking nonsense. This statement has sparked discussion in Punjab politics, as Captain has remembered his old party even after joining the BJP.”

The party did many wrong things with me, which is why I took this step (left Congress). However, I still miss Congress.”

Reasons given by Captain Amarinder Singh for leaving Congress:

Former Punjab Chief Minister (2002, 2017) Captain Amarinder Singh ended his long association with Congress in 2021. He first resigned as Punjab Chief Minister on September 18, 2021, and then resigned from the party on November 2, 2021.

The biggest reason Captain gave for separating from the party was the appointment of Navjot Singh Sidhu as Punjab Congress President. He called Sidhu a “companion of the Pakistani deep state” and “anti-national,” because Sidhu had hugged the Pakistani Army Chief during the opening of the Kartarpur Corridor. Captain said appointing Sidhu as President was against his advice and dangerous for Punjab’s security.

A large number of party MLAs wrote letters to Sonia Gandhi demanding Captain’s removal from the Chief Minister post. The MLAs complained that Captain was not available to meet anyone, he remained surrounded by his favorites, and during Captain’s second term, the government was run by officers.

Due to no action against the Badals in the Bargari sacrilege case and failure to fulfill the promise of a drug-free Punjab, resentment grew at the Punjab level against Congress, especially Captain, and the perception developed among people that Captain was running the government by compromising with the Badals.

Due to controversies and an anti-incumbency wave across Punjab (against Captain Amarinder Singh), he had to resign a few months before completing his term. In his resignation letter, Captain wrote that he was hurt due to old relations with the Gandhi family, but the party had betrayed him.

He said he was leaving the party in the interest of Punjab and the country. Captain said the party leadership (Sonia Gandhi, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi) had mistreated him. He felt repeatedly humiliated, especially by calling MLAs to Delhi and getting letters written against him. He said, “I am feeling humiliated.”
