West Bengal: Violence after election results, 5 deaths including Suvendu Adhikari’s PA

Post-election violence in West Bengal has pushed the state to the brink after the end of 15 years of TMC rule and the BJP’s victory. Despite the presence of security forces, violence continues unabated. So far, more than five people have been killed, including BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Personal Assistant (PA).

SNPNEWS.IN News (Gurmail Kamboj): The government led by Mamata Banerjee, who formed the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 1997 after splitting from Congress, ruled the state from 2011 to 2026 for 15 years. On 4 April, it was ousted from power after the BJP won 207 out of 294 seats. TMC could secure only 80 seats. Party supremo Mamata Banerjee herself lost from both Bhawanipur and Kharagpur Sadar constituencies.

After the defeat, TMC has accused the BJP of fraud and has alleged misuse of central agencies and security forces by the Election Commission. TMC leaders also accused the BJP and the Election Commission of deleting 91 lakh votes through SIR (Special Intensive Revision), a claim they even took to the Supreme Court, where they were disappointed.

Mamata Banerjee alleged that BJP workers pushed and manhandled her after the loss. She refused to resign, after which the Governor dissolved the assembly.

Following the BJP’s victory in the state, BJP workers created disturbances in Kolkata and several other cities. Clashes and vandalism occurred in areas like Tollygunge, Kasba, Beleghata, and Maniktala in Kolkata. Tension escalated in Esplanade and New Market areas after party offices were demolished using bulldozers.

Similar incidents of vandalism and violence were reported from Barasat, Bashirhat, Kamarhati, South 24 Parganas, Baruipur, Falta, Murshidabad, Baharampur, Jiaganj, Birbhum, Nanoor, North Bengal, Siliguri, and Alipurduar. In Asansol’s Jamuria and Barabani areas, TMC offices were set on fire and pelted with stones. More than five people have died in the violence so far.

Killing of Suvendu Adhikari’s PA

BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari’s Personal Assistant, Chandranath Rath, was shot dead on the night of 6 May 2026 in the Madhyamgram area of North 24 Parganas.

The incident took place around 10:30 PM near Dolatala on Jessore Road in Madhyamgram. Motorcycle-borne attackers stopped Chandranath’s Scorpio vehicle and fired indiscriminately at point-blank range. The investigation has revealed that Austria-made Glock 47X pistols were used in the attack.

Doctors said Chandranath received four bullets — two in the chest (which passed through the heart), one in the abdomen, and one on the face/head. His driver/assistant, Budhadev Bera, who was also in the vehicle, was seriously injured.

Police believe it was a well-planned conspiracy. The attackers used a vehicle with fake number plates and had conducted reconnaissance before the attack. Police have formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) and have recovered the motorcycle used in the crime.

Suvendu Adhikari has described it as a “targeted political killing.” He said Chandranath was killed only because he had played a key role in defeating Mamata Banerjee in Bhawanipur. Adhikari claimed that Chandranath possessed important political documents and information, which made him a target. He has demanded a CBI probe into the matter.

Trinamool Congress has rejected these allegations, saying it could be the result of internal factionalism within the BJP, and that the police should be allowed to conduct an impartial investigation.

Five BJP supporters were allegedly injured in a bomb attack in Panihati area of West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, police said on Thursday.

The incident took place late on Wednesday night, just hours after Chandranath Rath, a close aide of BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, was shot dead by motorcycle-borne assailants. The BJP accused the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) of carrying out retaliatory violence following the killing, according to news agency PTI.

According to police, unidentified assailants hurled crude bombs near St Xavier’s Institution in Panihati, injuring at least five BJP workers. The injured were taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata for treatment.

The Election Commission has adopted a ‘zero tolerance’ policy and has directed the State DGP and Chief Secretary to ensure immediate arrests. Police have so far detained more than 400 people in connection with violence and spreading tension.
