SNPNEWS.IN News (International): On 18 April, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva gave a very worrying speech at the ongoing “In Defence of Democracy” conference in Barcelona (Spain) on 18 April 2026. In this, Lula made sharp comments on world politics, wars and the United Nations. This speech was given after a meeting between Lula and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on 17 April.
The main focus of the speech was on the defense of democracy, the growing wars in the world and the failure of the UN Security Council.
Lula began his speech by saying that I stand to speak at this conference to defend democracy. We live in a world where democracy is under threat and wars are spreading to the point of madness.
He said that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council have failed to fulfill their responsibility. Those who should have been the Lords of Peace have now become the Lords of War. They are bombing poor countries, showing bravery by bombing women and children. They consider themselves emperors.
These five countries have failed to stop the wars. In Gaza, Lebanon, Iran, Ukraine and other places. They must change their attitude. They must call a meeting and end this madness of war. The world can no longer bear this burden. Last year, $2.7 trillion was spent on wars. If even half of this money was used properly, illiteracy could be eliminated from the world, the energy crisis could be solved and 630 million people could be freed from hunger.

Without naming the US president, Lula said that we cannot wake up every morning and listen to threats from a president’s tweet before going to bed at night. No president, no matter how powerful he is, can run the world by threatening wars through tweets. The world cannot run like this. He said that no president has the right to impose his views on others.
He said that the UN system of 1945 is no longer adequate. We should discuss veto power and give a greater role to Africa, Latin America and Asia. The UN should be strengthened and renewed, otherwise people will lose confidence in it. Democracy is not limited to votes. It is something that is done daily. People should get employment, health, education and food. If democracy is not made beneficial for the people, then people can lean towards dictatorship. With the weaknesses in democracy, forces like Hitler can emerge.
We as progressive people must unite against this reactionary movement (the rise of the far-right). We must fight for democracy, multilateralism and peace.”
